Automobile Mileage Rate

The reimbursement rate for use of a privately owned vehicle for university business is listed below:

As mentioned in the announcement of August 7, 2008 (see below), the mileage reimbursement rate has been reevaluated and it has been determined that the reimbursement rate for all business miles will remain at $0.50 per mile until further notice.

If you have any questions about the mileage reimbursement or the proper way to request reimbursement for business mileage, please contact John Harabedian at extension 5-2054.

August 7, 2008

To: All University Employees

As a result of continuing increases in fuel prices and the hardship this has created on University employees, the University is increasing the mileage reimbursement rate to $0.50 per mile for all business miles driven between July 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008. This represents a change to the Rutgers Policy Section 40.4.1, Paragraph I.5, which provides that the mileage reimbursement rate for employees that use private automobiles on University business is the "current mileage reimbursement rate established by the State of New Jersey."  The State rate is still $0.31.  We will reevaluate the need for this change at the end of the calendar year and notify you of the effective mileage rate for miles driven after December 31, 2008.

If you have already submitted a Travel and Business Expense Reimbursement (TABER) form for mileage incurred during this period, you may submit a new TABER for reimbursement of the increase ($0.19 per mile).  Please reference the voucher number for the original TABER in your description. Also, please note grants that have a specified budget for travel cannot exceed this budgeted amount without approval from the grantor.  If you cannot get this approval, you may need to adjust your travel plans or use other funds to cover the cost.

If you have any questions about this change or the proper way to request reimbursement for this increase on travel already submitted, please contact John Harabedian at extension 5-2054.
